2000 Most Challenging and Obscure Words by Norman W. Schur is a book like no other because it offers a rich sampling of English words, which definitions stand alone as entertaining miniature essays. It is a good vocabulary book for people who are interested in the example usage and etymology of the little-known terms one is likely to encounter in popular literature. The book is split up into two sections, the first section is the 1000 most challenging words, the second part is the 1000 most obscure words. Perhaps not the best source of knowledge for learners of English, Shur's writing is still great fun to read for anyone who wants to broaden their vocabulary. It is a must for self-respecting writers and anyone else who has ever wondered about the meaning of words such as: epopt, nepenthe, humuhumunukunukuapuaa, karkia, and mytacism.

Heelys have become an international craze since their introduction in 2000. Named after the company that designs them, these lightweight athletic shoes have become the latest trend in youth culture. They have also been known for the common misspelling of their name. Heelys, not Heelies or Healys, are a brand of roller shoes that have one or more wheels slightly protruding from each sole. Thus, the user can alternate between walking, running and rolling. One can even perform a variation of tricks with such shoes, including spins and popping wheelies. But Heelys have had a bad press in many countries, especially the UK, where they eventually got banned in February 2007. Although reported to be 29 times safer than cycling and 18 times safer than skateboards, the number of injuries requiring surgery seems alarming. This might be due to the fact that most of the users do not wear protective equipment. A recent study conducted in Ireland showed that the overwhelming majority of injuries in 2006 occurred in girls, most of whom were wearing the shoes for the first time. None were wearing protective gear. Doctors warn that Heelys should be treated as sports equipment rather than a toy.
