How many bags do you take when you go on holiday? One, two, three? That's as many as modern tourists typically carry these days. 4.1 .....And anyway you don't need to bring everything along - you can get what you need at your holiday destination. But things were very different no more than 200 years ago. There were no modern shops or services available for tourists. No wonder one needed everything to be brought from home. And a group of servants to carry them! A leather suitcase with a handle was not invented until the 19th century. 4.2 .....Earlier, people had travelled with huge, heavy boxes or trunks, made of metal or wood. 4.3 ....They even had hangers to prevent clothes from getting damaged in transit. The next big step forward was made by Samsonite in 1967. 4.4...... It was perfect for use on an airplane. And luggage wheels were born as late as 1987. The inventor, a former pilot, quickly became a multimillionaire.
